Education Has to Change When Expertise Is Abundant

A lot of education was designed for a world where expertise was scarce.

The teacher knew the subject. The textbook contained the knowledge. The classroom created access. The credential proved you had gone through the process.

That world is changing.

AI does not make learning unnecessary. That is the lazy conclusion. But it does make the old structure harder to defend.

If every student can ask for an explanation, a tutor, a quiz, a simulation, a translation, a worked example, a counterargument, a study plan, or a different analogy at any moment, then education has to become less about access to information and more about developing judgment, curiosity, discipline, and taste.

Curiosity Should Survive Contact With School

Children are naturally curious.

They ask strange and beautiful questions. They experiment. They notice patterns. They want to know why things work. They are not embarrassed by not knowing until the world teaches them to be embarrassed.

One of the sad parts of education is how often it turns curiosity into anxiety.

Math becomes a performance identity. Science becomes memorization. Writing becomes compliance. Grades become a proxy for worth. Students learn to avoid the subjects where they might look slow.

AI could make this worse if it becomes a shortcut machine.

But it could also make it much better.

A good AI tutor can let a student explore without shame. It can explain the same idea five different ways. It can slow down. It can generate practice at the right level. It can answer the question the student was afraid to ask in class.

The goal should not be to make students dependent on AI.

The goal should be to protect their willingness to learn.

Expertise Is Abundant. Understanding Is Not.

The internet already made information abundant.

AI makes expertise feel more abundant.

That difference matters. A search engine gives you pages. An AI system can give you a conversation. It can adapt to your level, generate examples, challenge your reasoning, and help you get unstuck.

But access to expertise is not the same as understanding.

Understanding still requires effort. You have to wrestle with ideas. You have to make mistakes. You have to explain things back. You have to build enough internal structure that the answer is not just something you received, but something you can reason from.

This is where education should move.

Less emphasis on remembering what can be retrieved instantly.

More emphasis on building mental models that help you use abundant expertise well.

Credentials Will Need to Mean Something Different

Credentials used to signal access, persistence, and some level of competence.

They still matter. I am not pretending degrees are useless. But if AI changes how people learn and build, credentials will need to evolve.

In a world where a motivated person can learn faster, prototype faster, and get help from AI at every step, the most useful signal may become evidence of what someone can actually do.

Can they solve real problems?

Can they ask good questions?

Can they use tools responsibly?

Can they explain their reasoning?

Can they work with others?

Can they make something useful?

Can they tell when an AI answer is wrong?

That last one is going to matter a lot.

The future credential may look less like a static certificate and more like a portfolio of judgment.

Learning How to Learn Becomes the Core Skill

I have always been drawn to the overlap between biology, software, and product because each field teaches a different way of thinking.

Biology teaches systems, feedback, constraints, and adaptation.

Software teaches abstraction, debugging, and leverage.

Product teaches empathy, tradeoffs, and judgment under uncertainty.

AI makes this kind of cross-domain learning more available. You can enter a new field faster. You can ask naive questions privately. You can generate a reading path. You can compare concepts across domains.

That is powerful.

But only if you know how to learn.

The scarce skill becomes directing your own attention. Knowing when to go deep. Knowing when you are fooling yourself. Knowing how to test whether you actually understand something. Knowing how to turn explanation into practice.

Education should train that directly.

Teachers Become More Important, Not Less

I do not think AI makes teachers obsolete.

I think it changes what the best teachers can focus on.

If AI can help with explanation, practice, translation, and feedback, then teachers can spend more energy on motivation, context, discussion, character, standards, projects, and the human parts of learning.

A teacher can see when a student has lost confidence.

A teacher can create a classroom culture where effort is normal.

A teacher can notice the difference between confusion and disengagement.

A teacher can help students care.

AI can support that, but it cannot replace the human responsibility of helping young people become more capable and more alive to the world.

The Point Is Agency

The best version of AI in education is not "everyone gets answers faster."

The best version is "more people feel capable of learning things they used to think were closed to them."

That is the part I care about.

A student who thought they were bad at math might discover they just needed a different explanation.

A kid in a small town might learn robotics, biology, design, or programming without waiting for the perfect class to exist.

An adult changing careers might build confidence one concept at a time.

A clinician, founder, engineer, or product manager might keep learning throughout life instead of treating education as something that ended at graduation.

That is a better world.

But it will not happen automatically.

We have to design for curiosity, agency, and judgment. We have to change what we test. We have to change what we reward. We have to stop pretending that the old credential system can absorb infinite expertise without changing.

When expertise becomes abundant, the purpose of education is not to guard access to knowledge.

It is to help people become the kind of people who can use knowledge well.
