1 + 1 = 0    1 - 1 = 2

Years ago, I served as a missionary in Panama and Central America. That season put me close to people whose lives looked very different from the world I had grown up in. Different homes, different pressures, different kinds of uncertainty, and often a very different relationship with what most people would call comfort.

One of the earliest lessons I learned there was simple, but it has stayed with me: people are often happiest when they are serving others in some way. Not performing kindness for credit. Not trying to look generous. Just helping, listening, showing up, and caring enough to make another person's burden a little lighter.

I have also seen the opposite. It is easy to become so focused on yourself that everything else starts to shrink. You can start protecting your own image, chasing your own advantage, or moving through people without really seeing them. Sometimes that turns into pushing people away. Sometimes it becomes stepping over people. Sometimes it becomes indifference.

That is what I mean by 1 + 1 = 0.

When life becomes only about adding more for yourself, the result can become strangely empty. More attention, more status, more control, more winning, more being right. But if all of it points inward, meaning starts to disappear. You add and add, but the sum gets smaller.

The opposite has also felt true to me.

1 - 1 = 2 means that when you subtract the obsession with yourself, something larger can appear. You make room to listen. You make room to learn from lives that do not look like yours. You make room for connection, humility, friendship, and service.

In that sense, thinking less about yourself is not a loss. It can be the beginning of receiving more: more perspective, more purpose, more tenderness, and more reasons to keep building something useful for other people.

That lesson has followed me for years. The more I remember to serve, the more life seems to give back.
