Before I was a biomedical engineer, before internships, and before product management became the formal language for what I liked doing, I started a small digital agency in Monterrey called TARK Digital.
It began with WordPress websites and grew into Shopify ecommerce stores, custom templates, Facebook ad campaigns, and small business software. The agency was not a large operation. Most of the work was me: talking to clients, scoping projects, writing copy, configuring sites, building templates, launching campaigns, and shipping the software. When a project needed stronger visual design, I brought in freelance designers.
What It Was
TARK Digital was a digital marketing and web development agency for small and medium businesses that needed to move online. The original positioning was in Spanish:
TARK es una agencia de marketing digital, expertos en campañas de estrategia digital, creamos marcas y publicidad para negocios. Expandimos al mundo digital.
In practice, that meant a mix of strategy, web presence, ecommerce, ads, and custom tools.
What I Built
- WordPress websites for local businesses that needed a professional online presence.
- Shopify ecommerce stores and custom templates for businesses starting to sell online.
- Facebook ad campaigns and basic digital marketing experiments for acquisition.
- Custom quoting and billing management software for operational workflows.
- Scheduling management software for an insurance firm in Monterrey.
- Client relationships beyond Mexico, including work with customers in the U.S. and Canada through platforms like Clutch.
Why It Mattered
TARK helped me pay my way through college. It also forced me to apply skills I had mostly taken for granted: programming, design taste, writing, client communication, selling, and turning vague business needs into working software.
At the time, I did not think of those as professional advantages. I had been building things for long enough that it felt normal. Running TARK made me realize that the mix itself was valuable: being able to understand a business problem, make the first version, explain it to a customer, and keep iterating until it worked.
I did not continue the agency after finishing school, but the pattern stayed with me. TARK was one of the first places where I learned to move from idea to shipped product without waiting for permission.
